Downloading Problems?

If the Authentication Window Closes, but no Download Starts
Probably you are blocking "pop-up" windows to avoid annoying advertising. Your browser or some utility software you are running is doing the blocking.

To allow pop-ups for software.berkeley.edu:

  • For Windows XP users with Service Pack 2: You should see a note on IE's Information Bar (at the top of the browser windeow under the web site address) saying "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here..." Click on the Information Bar and select the option to allow pop-ups from this site. This will allow future downloads from the Software site.
  • For the Mozilla Firefox browser: Use the Tools/Options/Web Features menu and under "Block Popup Windows" click on Add Site and add "software.berkeley.edu".
  • For the Opera 7 browser: Set Opera to 'Accept' or 'Open in Background'. (The latter opens the window under a "tab" rather than popping up a window.)

Detailed instructions on downloading software

  1. Click the Download from UCB button to begin the download process.
  2. SAFE will show information about the file to be downloaded.
Click on the CalNet Authentication button.
  3. A new window will open with the Authentication Web Server (AWS) page.  Enter your CalNet ID and passphrase to identify yourself and then click the Authenticate button.
  4. The AWS will momentarily say "You have successfully authenticated!" then SAFE will show the "Download is beginning" page.
  5. Watch for a File Download or similar dialog box from your browser:
Windows users should indicate Save to Disk for the file being downloaded.  Make note of the folder that the file will be saved to and the file's name, and click OK to begin the file transfer to your computer's hard disk.
Macintosh users will find that the file has been downloaded to the folder specified in their browser's Download Options Preferences.
Note: if the file is an HTML, PDF, or TXT file, it may be displayed rather than downloaded to a file.  In such a case, you can save the file with such menu commands as File/Save or File/Save Page As ...
  6. You can close the SAFE "Download is beginning" page or wait for it to close in one minute.
  7. When the download transfer has completed, locate the file you saved on your hard disk and double-click it to open it. This will usually start an installer program to begin the process of setting up your downloaded software for use on your computer.
