SAFE Error Messages
Normal authentication and authorization problems are reported as part of the
authentication pages (see Download
Instructions).
Unusual errors caused by the originating web server, the SAFE web
server, or the Authentication Web Server, etc. are reported by HTTP error
responses and occasionally by a special error page. If you retry the download and the problem
persists, let us know.
HTTP Error Messages
HTTP 403 Forbidden
You can be forbidden access if you are not authorized for some reason, for
example:
-
Your host IP address or network has been blocked from address to SAFE due
to misuse.
- Your address is on a UCB network but is not defined in the
Berkeley.EDU domain.
- You are using an old browser that cannot do at least SSL version 3
or has problems such that it will not work with SAFE.
HTTP 404 Not Found
The particular web page requested by your browser was not found. There are numerous reasons:
- Attempt to download with an "HTTP" URL. SAFE
downloads require HTTPS.
- The requested download file does not exist. The problem has
been logged and reported to the Web Master.
- The form of the request is wrong, incomplete, or excessive.
The problem has been logged and reported to the Web Master.
HTTP 500 Internal Server Error
This is an error within the SAFE web server itself. It has been
logged and reported to staff.
Special SAFE error messages will look like:

SAFE
Download Service - Error
The download file could not be found.
The file path and name given in the URI
could not be found or could not be opened for read.
You may have attempted to access an older
version of the download file that is no longer available. This can
happen when you find an old or cached web page using a search. You
should always start downloads from the WSSG Software or Calagenda home pages.
That way you always get any announcements and notices.
This is may be an error in the referring web site.
The Webmaster has been notified.
Use your browser's Back
button to try again.
|
The format is:
- A title line in bold,
- A short explanation,
- An action you can take to resolve the problem.
You may want to just try again.
Usually the SAFE web site has automatically sent email to the web master. If you send email to a support or
problem resolution group, you may want to cut the information from the
screen and paste it into your email. Or you may want to print the
page.
Some information will be shown underlined.
This is because such information may include blanks, whether valid or
invalid.
Invalid Characters
The URL and certain parameters sent by the requesting browser are
screened for valid characters. You may see "^" and
"~" in error reports:
| Indicator |
Meaning |
| ^ |
Replaces any control-character such as CR, LF, TAB |
| ~ |
Replaces any invalid character such as
"'<>\ etc. |
